🍓June Blog: Things To Do with Early Learners in the Classroom

Written by Alicia Jordan, Boots on the Farm Consulting, LLC

If you can’t take your early learners out to the farm or market, why not bring the farm experience into the classroom? Here are some great ways to introduce farm-to-table lessons this June.

âś… Set up a pretend farmers market

Create a dramatic play area with baskets, toy fruits and vegetables, and play money. Let children take turns being the farmer, the seller, and the shopper. This builds social skills, math practice, and vocabulary all at once.

âś… Do farm-themed sensory activities

Make herb-scented playdough by adding crushed basil or lavender. Children can explore textures and scents as they shape the dough. You can also set up a seed-sorting station with real or pretend seeds for a hands-on sorting activity.

âś… Read farm and garden books

Fill your reading corner with colorful picture books about farms, gardens, and markets. After reading, invite children to draw their own garden scenes or share what they would like to grow.

âś… Make a simple fresh snack

Choose an easy recipe, like making a fruit salad or tasting cucumber slices. Let children help with simple steps like rinsing or stirring. Talk about where each ingredient comes from and how it grows.

âś… Start a mini classroom garden

Even a windowsill planter with herbs or sprouts can give children the thrill of watching something grow. Let them help water and care for the plants each day.

These activities help early learners connect to nature, understand food origins, and build sensory and motor skills — all while having fun in the classroom!
