Introduction
August gardens are awash in color: deep reds of tomatoes, golden kernels of corn, and the dark green of okra pods. In the ECE classroom, we can harness that bounty to spark curiosity, fine-motor skills, and early science exploration.

1. Harvest Table Exploration
Setup: Create a low, sturdy “Harvest Table” with baskets of August produce (tomatoes, corn, okra, peppers).
Invite Curiosity: Let children handle each item—squeezing okra pods, tasting a cherry tomato, running fingers along corn silk.
Vocabulary Building: Label each item with picture-word cards. Practice new words: “silk,” “husk,” “stem.”

2. Seed-Saving Science

Activity: Cut open a dried bean pod (pre-soaked overnight to soften) and have kids extract the beans.
- Discussion: Talk about how beans carry seeds for next year’s plants.
Craft: Children can glue their seeds onto paper to make “August Seed Art”—a lasting reminder of the plant lifecycle.
3. Colorful Vegetable Stamping
Materials: Cut veggies in half (e.g., bell peppers, okra pods) and provide washable paint.
- Process: Children can dip veggie halves into paint and stamp patterns on paper, exploring symmetry and texture.
Reflection: Compare the stamp patterns: “Why does okra make a star shape?” “What happens when we press harder or softer?”

4. Story & Snack Circle

Read Aloud: Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert (or a similar garden-themed picture book).
Snack Time: Serve sliced tomato and corn kernels. Encourage positive tasting phrases: “I like…” or “I’m curious about…”
Produce from the garden can not only be used in meals and snacks, but can also be incorporated into a variety of classroom activities. Find more activity ideas on our Resources page!
