Growing Curiosity with Farm to ECE at Village Group Home Daycare

This blog post was written by Cynthia Edwards, owner and director of Village Group Home Daycare.

At Village Group Home Daycare, we believe that some of the best learning happens outdoors. One of our favorite activities is spending time in our garden, where children discover how plants grow and why gardens are so important.

We invite the children to help prepare the garden by turning the soil, planting seeds, and watering the plants. We explain that every tiny seed has the potential to grow into something healthy and beautiful with sunlight, water, air, and care. As they watch the plants grow day by day, the children learn patience, responsibility, and the rewards of taking care of something living.

We talk with the children about why we have a garden. We explain that gardens provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs that help keep our bodies healthy and strong. We also teach them that gardens help bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, which are important for growing many of the foods we eat. By caring for our garden, we are also caring for the environment.

The children enjoy watering the plants, pulling weeds, observing insects, and harvesting vegetables when they are ready. We encourage them to touch, smell, and sometimes even taste the fresh produce. These hands-on experiences help children become more willing to try new foods and develop healthy eating habits.

Our garden also teaches valuable life skills. The children learn to work together, share responsibilities, solve problems, and celebrate each small success. Whether it’s seeing the first flower bloom or picking a ripe tomato, every milestone becomes an exciting learning opportunity.

At Village Group Home Daycare, our garden is more than a place where plants grow—it’s a place where curiosity, confidence, responsibility, and a love of nature grow as well. Through gardening, we help children understand that with patience, kindness, and care, wonderful things can flourish.
