Taste of the Farm: Planting Seeds of Learning with Farmer Shelia Daniels

Written by Alicia Jordan, Boots on the Farm Consulting, LLC

On Earth Day, we had the joy of bringing the farm experience directly to the children of Kids of Character Learning Center, LLC in Livingston, Alabama. With 7 dedicated teachers and nearly 40 bright, energetic students, the day was filled with hands-on discovery, laughter, and learning—all led by local farmer Shelia Daniels of Sowing and Growing.

Farmer Shelia brought her love of the land and deep knowledge of growing to our littlest learners. The children were excited to get their hands in the soil as they planted corn seeds, counting and measuring them as part of an interactive math and science activity.

To deepen the experience, Farmer Shelia created a seed activity book just for them—complete with coloring pages and space to track their planting progress. It was a perfect blend of farm education and early literacy.

The highlight for many was the sensory exploration using herbs fresh from the farm. The children touched, smelled, and compared chocolate mint and basil, describing the scents and textures in their own words. One child squealed, “It smells like candy!” while holding a mint leaf to their nose.

This visit wasn’t just about planting—it was about planting curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Through the farm-to-early-childhood connection, the children learned where food begins, how plants grow, and how their senses help them explore the world.
